The answer: We don’t! The Bible makes itself understood.
he Bible Interprets itself and cautions us not to bring our own private thoughts or opinions as to what a particular passage may mean. We allow the Bible, the Word of God, to speak for itself.
2 Peter 1:20, 21: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Parts of the Bible that seem to conflict or contradict other parts are usually due to our misunderstanding, or may be an error in the translation from the original writings in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek. Additionally we must understand the culture and the customs, also known as orientalisms, that were a part of the times in which a passage was written.
Here are some abbreviated and simple keys on how the Bible interprets or explains itself:
1.In the verse:
A. Right where it is written (the vast majority of the time).
B. The word or words must be understood in light of the time period in which it was written. (a Bible Dictionary and a Biblical Concordance can help explain the ancient meaning of the words or customs)
C. The verse must be in harmony with all other Biblical references on the same topic. Similar passages may not be identical incidents. Scriptures before Jesus Christ’s death on earth and resurrection were not all written directly for or to us in this time period, but were written for our learning.
2. In its context, to get the “whole story”
3. In a previous usage, where it was first mentioned.
If we keep these simple rules in mind, the meaning and application of the Holy Scriptures will become clear and understandable. If we pray and ask God Almighty, the author, to teach us as we read, the eyes of our understanding will be enlightened. You and I will be amazed how the Bible comes to life! Although it was written many centuries ago, the timeless words of God will speak to us in a personal, living and very powerful way. We get to know the Creator of the heavens and earth, who loves us individually. He will guide us to the answers we need in our lives: to heal, comfort, encourage, empower and give our lives meaning, purpose and direction. Learning is an exciting adventure! Enjoy!
